John Alan Giarelli was born in Connecticut in 1957, and received his B.A. degree in 1980 from Antioch College in Ohio, and his M.A. in English literature from the University of Connecticut in 1988. He is a writer and adjunct professor of English at Los Angeles City College, where he has taught since 1997. John is passionate about his upper level, critical thinking course, titled "City of Angels: A Multicultural Study of Los Angeles." An exploration and analysis of all things L.A., especially its rich literary and cultural histories, the course inspires students to better understand the city through the works of its writers, artists, filmmakers, and by taking on-site historical excursions. It ultimately imbues them with greater insight into the fascinating and complex identity of the city and region in which they live and their unique purpose and place in it.
